There are several steps that restoration professionals should take to determine the source of an odor and how to eliminate it. They must consider the effect of both real and psychological odors and provide services to eliminate both. They must ask the right questions, rather than automatically assume the source is urine if there are animals in the home. Among other things, they should determine the pH of the urine deposit, the type and number of animals on the premises, whether there were previous deodorization attempts, whether any animals present were prescribed medication, whether the upholstery in the affected areas has been cleaned, and whether the HVAC system needs cleaning. It also is important for technicians to consider whether other health-threatening pathogenic biological organisms are present that could pose a threat to themselves and homeowners, and take the necessary and appropriate safety measures prior to proceeding with treatments.
