Avoiding Carpet Catastrophes

On

During a recent carpet care webinar, flooring inspector and IICRC-approved instructor Mark Violand stressed that "carpet does not wear out; it uglies out." Improper use and maintenance of equipment can cause problems like wear and tear, fuzz lines, friction burns, and loss of color. Cleaning professionals should invest a little time and money in their vacuum technology to prevent having to replace the carpet. They should take care of the cord, pulling it from the wall, dropping it to the floor, and going back to the vacuum to wrap it up. They should avoid twisting the cord around their arm, which will create a crimp in the cable. They also should regularly check the brush bar and replace it or the brush strip if the brushes are not making contact with the floor once the vacuum height has been set. This is important because using an overly aggressive or worn out brush bar can cause severe damage to a carpet. Among other things, they should ensure airflow settings are appropriate and change the filter as needed.
