Training Tips That Work

Cleaning companies that take the time to invest in training find that workers work safely and more effectively. This initial investment can reduce one major problem in the industry: turnover. However, companies need to craft a training program that helps students retain the knowledge they are given. Students only remember about 5% of what they learn under some certain training methods. According to Matt Morrison with Kaivac, these are the three most effective ways to teach cleaning professionals. First, once a worker has mastered a task, by training other workers in the same task, they can retain about 90% of what they were taught. "This is often referred to as peer tutoring," says Morrison. "Each time the worker teaches someone else, they are refreshing their own memory." Secondly, workers should be encouraged to watch videos on certain cleaning methods and then practice tasks seen in those videos. Thirdly, cooperative learning is a group training process usually performed in a classroom. A group of custodial workers, for instance, would be taught how to perform a specific task, then they would practice the task within the group.
